Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

This work is part of a series in which Roberto Carignani uses black and white to create highly expressive results. The composition is constructed through a complex design based on a lively and nervous graphic line. This line is precise in its depiction of the subjects, yet at the same time manages to be concise and expressionistic. The black and white contrast is highly evocative, perfectly complementing the mysterious nature of Carignani's typical subjects.

Roberto Carignani was a Neapolitan painter born in 1894 and died in 1975. Influenced by Spanish painting (El Greco, Velázquez, Goya), his training took place under the guidance of Vincenzo Irolli. He specialized in painting lively sensual scenes or dark nocturnes, especially those depicting the island of Capri.
