Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This work is part of a series in which Roberto Carignani, employing the rare candle smoke on tile technique, employs black and white to achieve highly expressive results. The composition is constructed through a complex design based on a lively and nervous graphic line. This line is precise in its description of the subjects, yet at the same time manages to be concise and expressionistic. The black and white contrast is highly evocative, perfectly complementing the mysterious nature of Carignani's typical subjects.
Roberto Carignani was a Neapolitan painter born in 1894 and died in 1975. Influenced by Spanish painting (El Greco, Velázquez, Goya), his training took place under the guidance of Vincenzo Irolli. He specialized in painting lively sensual scenes or dark nocturnes, especially those depicting the island of Capri.
