Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.
Totems are a subject Roberto Crippa developed between 1954 and 1956. The spiral remains a key theme, a spatialist concept whose three-dimensionality tends to transcend the boundaries of the work. In this case, the spiral generates enigmatic figures, fetishes that seem to hail from an unknown tribal civilization. In this particular work, the totems are created in a calligraphic style, composed of thin lines of color. This gives the work a remarkable graphic elegance, further enhanced by the balanced use of bright, vibrant colors.
Gaetano Crippa, known as Roberto, was born in Monza in 1921 and died in Bresso in 1972. Besides being a painter and engraver, he was also known as an aviator. He began his career as a figurative artist and then moved on to a Cubism very close to Picasso. He finally found his own artistic language after embracing the Spatialist Manifesto, creating the "Spirals" cycle. Spirals are constructions that, through their circular movements, tend towards three-dimensionality and, therefore, transcend the dimension of the work, remaining in line with the principles of Spatialism.
