Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Robert Joos's depiction of the female nude draws inspiration from avant-garde expressionism. The artist seeks to transcend what is perceived by the senses to extract the true essence of reality and convey it on canvas in a vibrant and moving manner. For this reason, the human figure is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with a highly advanced exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The brushstrokes delineate the forms in a highly dynamic manner. Color is used according to an emotional and spiritual interpretation.
Robert Joos was born in Gorizia in 1926 and passed away in San Donà in 1998. On the advice of Gorizia painter Italico Brass, he enrolled in the Art School in Venice. He began his career as a journalist at the Venice newspaper "Gazzettino" in 1951. His interests ranged widely; he held a solo exhibition in Gorizia as early as 1945, and in 1948 he exhibited at the provincial art exhibition at Palazzo Attems in Gorizia. An art critic, he worked extensively as a illustrator, poster designer, and commercial artist; he was also interested in theater and cinema. He continued his work as a painter and participated in over two hundred solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. In 1981, he moved to San Donà di Piave, continuing to paint. His works are present in many collections in Europe, the United States, Australia and in numerous public museums and art galleries (Venice, Innsbruck, Vatican City, London, New York).
