Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
Roberto Masi's style hinges on objectivity and rationality. In his painting, forms do not dissolve into the atmosphere but remain compact and clear. Indeed, it can be said that Masi's artistic language finds its essence in the harmonious and balanced juxtaposition of masses and balances, covered with compact fields of bright colors. Everything else is decontextualized in a sort of magical realism in which even the subjects, when not turned away, have highly generalized features.
Roberto Masi was a Florentine painter, born in 1940 and passed away in 2011. He initially pursued a different path, enrolling in the Faculty of Economics and Business, but then felt the call of art. He began frequenting the artistic circles of his city, and his encounter with Antonio Bueno and Pietro Annigoni was crucial. He attended the Accademia Libera del Nudo. In 1972, he made his debut at the Galleria il Moro in Florence with the Segno Rosso group. He would become one of the leading exponents of Italian Primitivism.
