Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In this painting, Roberto Masia appears to exhibit a stylistic phase of post-Impressionism quite close to Van Gogh. That is, the painter uses a quick, immediate hatching style that is still Impressionist, but the direction in which the painting is pushed is to convey an emotional, almost spiritual, image of this place. The technique is highly textured, and the brushstrokes have a regularity reminiscent of Divisionism. The church appears as a flickering apparition amidst the mists of the lagoon. The color palette is made up of bright, slightly anti-naturalistic hues.
Roberto Masia is a painter originally from Iglesias, where he was born in 1958, but currently resides in Padua. His career began in 1970 and he has exhibited in over two hundred shows, including alongside artists such as Guttuso, De Pisis, Migneco, and De Chirico. His artistic language draws heavily from Impressionism, but he has also developed his own unique techniques of Fusionism and Fragmentation.
