Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. In the work of the Roman artist Roberto Micheli, subjects drawn from everyday life predominate, from simple episodes inspired by city life or the countryside, as in this case.
This work highlights Roberto Micheli's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to convey sensory information in the depicted scene, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, breaking down the space into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subjects. Thus, within a substantially two-dimensional surface, compressed in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the painter with broad, dense brushstrokes of color, in an extremely fluid manner that unites the space and its elements. Chromatically, furthermore, the entire surface of the work is blended with a unifying palette, which exploits the precious silver support to lend the scene even more evocative light reflections.
Roberto Micheli was born in Rome in 1940. He attended the poster design course with Professor Ridolfi and the Accademia Romana di San Giacomo with Ziveri. In 1971, he moved to Paris, where he explored various artistic experiences, including ceramics and sculpture. He has held solo and group exhibitions in various cities, and his works are included in several private collections.
