Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject matter and method of representation can be compared to the Naïve movement. The Naïve artist is by definition self-taught, someone who hasn't attended an art school but has found inspiration within themselves. Stylistically, this translates into figurative painting that offers a simplified interpretation of reality, with infantile and unconsciously primitivist overtones. However, even the Naïve artist, in his spontaneity, possesses a self-awareness that leads him to develop a very specific aesthetic language, distinguishing it from amateurism.
On a more strictly formal level, the artist Roberto Sguanci can truly be considered an example of a naïve conception of painting. His simplification of reality, in fact, embodies several elements of creativity, discernible in the complexity of his drawing and his exploration of color. The subjects are indeed childlike, but the linear elaboration that constructs them exalts the forms and volumes, which take on almost caricatural qualities. The color, too, is excessive, at times anti-naturalistic, but always selected in a manner consistent with the overall concept of the work.
Roberto Sguanci is an artist born in Florence in 1948. A painter, poet, and writer, his work focuses on a naive language with accentuated plasticity or on more ironic compositions with paradoxical and allegorical content.
