Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject certainly depicts the martyrdom of a saint. The protagonist appears at the center of the scene, undressed and chained. In a choral and agitated scene, he is surrounded by various adoring figures, while Roman centurions drag him away. It is difficult to precisely define the depicted episode, however, the presence of the chains suggests a scene of the martyrdom of Saint Peter, given the importance that Saint Peter's chains hold in Catholic tradition.
As we can see from this work, the artist P. Rocca draws on ancient models in his artistic approach, not only in his choice of subject matter but also in his language. Indeed, we note the painter's strong Renaissance inspiration, especially in the definition of monumental figures, which hark back to Masaccio and Michelangelo. Even in the composition, Rocca strives to respect Renaissance principles of harmony. The group is constructed as a sort of ideal pyramid, with the image of the saint at its center, further enhanced by the use of light. Furthermore, all the figures in the group are linked by a correspondence of gestures and attitudes, in accordance with the principles of unity of the work typical of Renaissance art. However, it should be emphasized that Rocca reworks his model with a modern sensibility. The figures, though plastically enhanced, are subjected to a certain simplification in an expressionistic manner. The quality of the work is excellent, with the application of the brushstrokes achieved with a very light and nuanced touch.
The artist P. Rocca, as we can see from the analysis of this work, draws inspiration from ancient painting, particularly the Renaissance. Both his subjects and his style look to the past, recontextualizing it with a contemporary sensibility.
