Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In his pictorial production, artist Rocco Cocchiarelli always navigates a terrain of conceptual and iconographic complexity, between symbolism and surrealism. Here, however, we see him grappling with a traditional subject, landscape. However, even in this case, he does not shy away from transfiguring reality according to his poetics of fantasy and wonder. The representation, in fact, largely reflects the sensory element, but formally, the artist accentuates its illusory and visionary nature. The language used is that of hyperrealism, which draws directly on the aesthetics of Surrealism and is here transferred by Cocchiarelli to a classic subject, landscape. The volumes of the objects are highly sculptural, enhancing the contorted forms of the trees. The use of color also transfigures this landscape into a surreal dimension, with the intervention of the blue of the foliage, imbued with anti-naturalistic values, opening up a space of the symbolic and spiritual.
Rocco Cocchiarelli, aka Meridoch, is a refined painter with a hyperrealist style, inspired by esoteric readings and the shady dealings of everyday Italy. A student of the philosopher Enrico Gianfranco Guidazzi, Rocco Cocchiarelli has exhibited throughout Italy and at the Vatican, in venues such as the Galleria d'Arte in Milan and the Agostiniana in Rome. Among his accolades, at Palazzo Barberino in Rome, he was awarded the gold medal for best work.
