Description of the work
Description of the work
| The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who tackle it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer. |

The painting was executed with great technical and formal skill. Compositionally, it is very balanced: the clown's face is perfectly centered. The subject appears slightly inclined, creating a diagonal compositional line that harmoniously separates the lower area, filled with the puffs of the costume, from the empty upper area, with a barely visible background. The painter's technique is also remarkable, managing with just a few touches of color to recreate the lightness and fluffiness of the clown's collar, the smudges of makeup on his face, or the reflection of light on his fake nose. The painting was done by Rodolfo Soldi, a ninety-two-year-old painter still active, very popular in the Monferrato area. |
