Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The pictorial style expressed in this painting by Rodolfo Viola is based on a geometric reconstruction of perceptible reality, which, however, takes on a decidedly expressionist and poetic quality. As we can see, the artist's starting point is Paul Cézanne, in his proto-Cubist exploration of perceptible reality. Indeed, the entire scene is constructed within a complex, multifaceted space, where the various chromatic zones are arranged in overlapping planes. In this way, the artist reconstructs the subject by thoroughly investigating it within a rational composition with a strong geometric feel. However, Viola's sensibility differs from Cézanne's structures, opting for a more synthetic and abstract rendering of his exploration of reality.
Rodolfo Viola was born in Milan in 1937. His painting reflects the currents of the Informal Art movement of the time. He has received numerous awards and recognitions: the Republic of San Marino dedicated a series of stamps to him, his seascapes became the symbol of the America's Cup, and one of his paintings was chosen to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the construction of the Duomo. These are just some of the events that have allowed Viola to become a leading figure on the international art scene.
