Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the representation of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, has no significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The work in question is part of a series, entitled "Romanticism," in which the artist Rodolfo Zito reworks the genre scene according to his style, balancing figurative and
expressionism.
Compared to other works with mythological or symbolist subjects, in which he displays a more pronounced dynamism, when he tackles the traditional theme of the genre scene, Rodolfo Zito consistently adopts a more classical style. Consequently, the expressionist component of his language is reduced in favor of a more naturalistic rendering and a more harmonious and balanced composition of the scene. However, stylistic elements can still be discerned that point to a symbolic transfiguration of the representation, a constant feature of Zito's work. This can be seen in the highly synthetic execution of the elongated characters and in the choice of generally cold and anti-naturalistic color tones.
Rodolfo Zito was born in Molochio in 1924 and passed away in Rome in 1995. Zito's passion for painting began at an early age, and he began his training at a young age with his fellow countryman Antonio Cannata. During this apprenticeship, Zito developed his technique, based on a lively pictorialism that allowed him to achieve a strongly expressionist style. His favorite subjects are compositions with strong symbolic and allegorical meaning, always combining classical references and the recurrence of equestrian figures.
