Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. This type of subject can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, and Puvis des Chavannes, who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references. Rodolfo Zito's work frequently features works characterized by highly complex iconography. The theme of the horse, one of this painter's favorite subjects, is particularly prominent.

Even in this complex iconography, which incorporates classicist references, such as the group on the right of the painting, Rodolfo Zito displays his style, still somewhat figurative yet elegantly expressionistic. In this case, a bold linearity shapes the figures and enhances their contours, creating a composition brimming with movement. The vibrant color further enhances the work's expressionistic verve. But the composition adds a further, fundamental dynamic and theatrical component, completely overturning traditional spatial and perspective rules. The subjects are thus arranged along multiple lines within a non-linear and complex space. The figure of the horse, a recurring theme in Rodolfo Zito's work, is also emblematic. It is always structured along a sinewy, dynamic line, a symbol of his energy and speed.
Rodolfo Zito was born in Molochio in 1924 and passed away in Rome in 1995. Zito's passion for painting began at an early age, and he began his training at a young age with his fellow countryman Antonio Cannata. During this apprenticeship, Zito developed his technique, based on a lively pictorialism that allowed him to achieve a strongly expressionist style. His favorite subjects are compositions with strong symbolic and allegorical meaning, always combining classical references and the recurrence of equestrian figures.
