Description of the work
Folder containing 5 silver bas-reliefs
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. This type of subject can be traced back to the artistic language of late-nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, and Puvis des Chavannes, who, while employing a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references. In this particular work, dedicated to the theme of mystery, Roger Gyò uses the symbolism of the mask as a traditionally expressionist iconographic element. He thus draws on the Eastern world, but also on the ancient theatrical masks of ancient Greece and Rome, to recontextualize everything in a modern work with strongly existential implications.
This work demonstrates Roger Gyò's remarkable technical skill as a goldsmith and engraver. He maintains the supreme formal quality of his subjects, creating precious objects that resemble ancient archaeological finds, relics of long-gone civilizations. This evocative quality stems from the highly iconic quality the artist imbues these masks with, a combination of his desire to draw on an archaic language and the need to embrace contemporary, expressionist aesthetics.
Roger Gyò is the pen name of Ennio Colaiagono. His work has developed primarily in goldsmithing and engraving, but he is also a painter. Roger Gyò's artistic production is distinguished by an expressionistic exploration, based on symbolic suggestions that draw on recontextualizations of the testimonies of past civilizations.
