Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject to which Rolando Nicodemi feels a special connection is undoubtedly that of the still life, in which the painter depicts inanimate objects typically belonging to the natural world—baskets of fruit, flowers, and even objects reminiscent of everyday life—in their static state. This genre enjoyed a revival in the 17th century, with the aim not only of exalting painting but also of concealing certain philosophical concepts. This approach to reflecting on the pictorial and philosophical conception of paintings leads us to the Metaphysical art of the 20th century, where numerous artists questioned human existence through art itself. Artists such as Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi, and especially Filippo de Pisis seem to have been the masters of Nicodemi, who, in more recent times, has successfully translated the plastic lesson associated with a return to order and color. The bowl of eggs so beautifully depicted by painter Rolando Nicodemi finds its pictorial setting within a bare space, where only the two legs of the table stand out. Here too, the subject draws on peasant life, with a pared-down chromatic palette, where even the shadows have a light essence. The painter does not emphasize the shadows with bold colors, opting instead for light hues that convey a sense of lightness, while also offering a reflection on the pictorial and philosophical concept of the essentiality of life. Artist Rolando Nicodemi was born in Ferrara in 1922 and died in his hometown in 2014. The distinctive character of Rolando Nicodemi's painting certainly has roots in twentieth-century plastic art, where movements such as metaphysics emerged, rediscovering the conceptual essence of still life.
