Description of the work
Description of the work
In the work we see, Rolando Nicodemi returns to the theme of still life, but in this case the artist introduces objects reminiscent of the marine world, specifically two shells placed on the surface of the bottle. This genre, a favorite of the painter, leads us toward a pared-down style of painting that sees his embrace, even in recent times, of a delicate predilection for the metaphysical nature of the painting. The Metaphysics that nourishes the painter can be ascribed to that of important artists who worked in the Emilia-Romagna region; we are talking about artists such as Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi, and especially Filippo de Pisis. These artists seem to have been the masters of Nicodemi, who has, in more recent times, successfully translated the plastic lesson that accompanies a return to order and color. Furthermore, Metaphysical painting is recognized for its ability to find within clear and precise representations philosophical concepts dedicated to capturing the essence of things. The tones of this painting beautifully and intelligently delineate the contours of the objects. The composition is spare, with natural elements predominating. The painter's hand acknowledges the lightness of his painting, finding in this representation a new form of support. The natural element is very evident here, but at the same time it ties in with the powerful metaphysical ideas that the Bolognese masters instilled in the artist. The almost disturbing sense of the objects' stasis translates into a painting that creates a beautiful dichotomy between light and shadow. Artist Rolando Nicodemi was born in Ferrara in 1922 and died in his hometown in 2014. The distinctive character of Rolando Nicodemi's painting certainly has roots in twentieth-century plastic art, where movements such as metaphysics emerged, rediscovering the conceptual essence of still life.
