Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject to which Rolando Nicodemi feels a special connection is undoubtedly that of the still life, in which the painter depicts inanimate objects typically belonging to the natural world—baskets of fruit, flowers, and even objects reminiscent of everyday life—in their static state. This genre enjoyed a revival in the 17th century, not only intended to enhance painting but also to conceal certain philosophical concepts. This approach to reflecting on the pictorial and philosophical conception of paintings leads us to the Metaphysical art of the 20th century, where numerous artists questioned human existence through art itself. Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi, and especially Filippo de Pisis seem to have been Nicodemi's teachers, and in more recent times, he has successfully translated the plastic lesson associated with a return to order and color. The canvas we have the pleasure of admiring has a solid pictorial foundation, where the painter emphasizes the heavy brushstrokes. Rolando Nicodemi favors cool tones; in fact, even though the object's supporting surface is a chalky white, the contrasting yellow is subdued. This allows for a cohesive palette that finds its balance. The same goes for the mushrooms at the center of the painting; although sketched, the subject emerges thanks to the expressive luminosity of the color and the contrast. Artist Rolando Nicodemi was born in Ferrara in 1922 and died in his hometown in 2014. The distinctive character of Rolando Nicodemi's painting certainly has roots in twentieth-century plastic art, where movements such as metaphysics emerged, rediscovering the conceptual essence of still life.
