Description of the work
Description of the work
A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes and equestrian monuments, and painters have always found it a challenge to depict it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering.
Romano Mussolini's paintings have a highly recognizable artistic language, even when he abandons his favorite subject, the clown. The figures are sharply delineated, while the color is consistently light, sometimes reaching a heightened painterly quality with highly expressionistic effects. Thus, the figures appear almost dematerialized within a two-dimensional surface, conveying a sense of extreme lightness. Formally, this translates into a highly animated and dynamic pictorial style that ensures freshness and immediacy of execution. His brushstrokes, therefore, are characterized by a remarkably cursive touch, composed of sudden flickers that effectively capture the vibrations of light on objects. The entire composition is imbued with a calm realism and a freshness deriving from the artist's technical prowess.
Romano Mussolini was born in Forlì in 1927 and died in Rome in 2006. A primarily figurative painter, he focused primarily on genre subjects such as clowns, horses, and landscapes. His compositions display a simplicity of line and color. His passion for painting began in 1945 in Naples, where, under the guidance of the painters Corrura and Terraccini, he immediately achieved success. Romano Mussolini, in addition to his paintings, was also famous as a jazz musician and composer.
