Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, and Puvis des Chavannes, who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references. However, it is important to emphasize that the painting has specific biographical references. The work was created by Romano Mussolini during the period in which he was separating from Maria Scicolone. The artist identifies with the clown, portrayed next to his wife, from whom he is about to separate. This makes this painting particularly interesting, as, along with "The Actors," it is Romano Mussolini's only autobiographical work.
Romano Mussolini's paintings have a consistently recognizable artistic language, even when he abandons his favorite subject, the clown. The figures are delineated by bold outlines, while the color is always light, sometimes reaching a heightened painterly quality with highly expressionistic effects. Thus, the figures appear almost dematerialized within a two-dimensional surface, conveying a sense of extreme lightness.
Romano Mussolini, born in Forlì in 1927 and died in 2006, was a primarily figurative painter who focused primarily on genre subjects such as clowns, horses, and landscapes. His compositions display a simplicity of line and color.
