Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The work is a study of the female form, with the artist's exploration of volume and a complex pose. This particular piece demonstrates how the artist's classical training played a fundamental role in shaping his artistic language. The artist pursues an ideal of pure, harmonious beauty through the creation of balanced volume within the composition, yet this is brought to life by soft modeling that softens the forms. Furthermore, the precise rendering of the subject's clothing demonstrates the importance of the realist component in Romano Stefanelli's sculpture.
Romano Stefanelli was a Florentine painter and sculptor, born in 1931 and passed away in 2016. He was a disciple of Pietro Annigoni, from whom he learned the great realist and naturalist pictorial tradition, devoting himself primarily to portraits and landscapes. From this figurative approach, his research developed toward a deeper lyricism in representation. He exhibited his works in major Italian cities and abroad since 1968, the year of his debut at the Levi Gallery in Milan. He was also deeply involved in sacred art. Among his most important frescoes are the choir ceiling of the Abbey of Montecassino, the wall cycles of the churches of Santa Maria Assunta in Quarrata and Santa Maria in Massarella, and individual works in the churches of San Michele Arcangelo in Ponte Buggianese and Santa Maria in Torri.
