Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Rossana Martino is an artist whose printmaking revisits and elaborates on her mountain landscapes. This recontextualization occurs through the use of a graphic technique that has led her to constant experimentation. This experimentation also involves artistic language, as the landscape undergoes a profound transformation and, precisely through exploring the infinite expressive possibilities of the graphic medium, becomes pure aesthetics, tending, in this case, toward a geometric and rational reconstruction. The mountain profile is thus rendered using clean, broken lines, creating pure volumes that enhance the formal values. This sculptural exaltation is further emphasized by the alternating light and shaded areas, achieved through refined hatching.
As we can see from an analysis of this work, the artist Rossana Martino stands out for her etchings in which nature is expressively recontextualized. In this artist's case, the landscape is reconstructed geometrically to enhance its plastic qualities.
