Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The style of the painter Rubens Capaldo, in much of his work, is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of reality and communicate it on canvas in a passionate and vehement manner. For this reason, through the application of color, he develops a highly synthesised process that reduces subjects to dense, material layers of paint, in which the painter's emotion is also the protagonist, conveyed through his agitated gestures. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of Rubens Capaldo's painting. This power is also based on a specific aesthetic choice that reaffirms the dramatic tone of his works: a preference for a monochrome from which the images emerge almost with difficulty, establishing a struggle with the pictorial material.
Rubens Capaldo was born in 1908 in Paris, where his family had gone in search of work, but soon returned to Naples, where he passed away in 1998. He briefly attended night school at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, but was forced to abandon it to continue his father's work, a majolica craftsman, even after his father's death. From about twelve to twenty-seven years old, he worked as a ceramist, but while he loved this work, his great passion remained painting, to which he devoted himself in his spare time and often even at night. Despite not having earned any academic qualifications, he taught at the Institute of Fine Arts in Benevento for many years, until 1973. Capaldo, self-taught and a tireless worker, painted extensively; He produced with passion and tenacity, spending his artistic life in the stubborn pursuit of self-improvement, never content or satisfied with what he managed to create and almost unaware of his art and of the fact that he was one of the most representative protagonists of Neapolitan art of the twentieth century with a highly personal and modern style of painting.
