Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
This panel, which has a more sketchy character compared to Rubens Santoro's official production, reveals an unusual side of the great Calabrian landscape painter. Indeed, the work reveals a more spontaneous and instinctive side of Rubens Santoro, compared to his balanced compositions, based on carefully studied settings. The strokes used to depict this small portion of nature are sketchy; the forms come to life with a few quick strokes. However, despite the speed and immediacy of this work, we can see how the great artist's ability to synthesize and render naturalistic images remains undiminished.
Rubens Santoro was born in Mongrassano in 1859 and died in Naples in 1942. He came from a prominent family of artists, with his father Giovanni Battista and his brother Francisco. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, but was largely self-taught. He painted genre scenes and landscapes. His light-filled views of Venice are particularly famous, opening his way to English and French collectors. From 1910 to 1924, he participated in six Venice Biennales.
