Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
The surreal subject of this work, which features the sudden appearance of a statue of Saint Peter in front of a church, is developed by Ruiz with a highly original and refined style. He eschews traditional hyperrealism for a more conceptual approach, aimed at heightening the sense of alienation conveyed by the subject itself. The statue is depicted as a concrete presence in its plasticity with a very marked design. However, its volume is constructed along divergent and contrasting lines that create a complex and non-univocal space. The same can be said for the space that accommodates the entire work, as is also evident in the depiction of the church. Furthermore, the entire composition tends toward an expressionistic essentiality. The application of color is also crucial, with a highly complex and dynamic material mix.
As we can see from this work, the artist Ruz stands out for his highly complex and original research. His subjects are developed according to a surreal aesthetic with an expressionist style in a complex space that also hints at Cubism.
