Description of the work
Description of the work
During the 1950s and 1960s, the so-called poetics of the object began to spread in European and American art. Harking back to the readymades of Dadaist memory, a new wave of groups or movements emerged that repurposed everyday objects or discarded materials as works of art. The departure from traditional Dada lay in the strong influence of Abstract Expressionism, which led to the reconfiguration of objects with new languages and new stimuli. In this work, artist Sergio Spataro meditates on the aesthetics of neo-Dada, Informel, and Arte Povera.
In a work like this, artist Sergio Spataro almost completely blurs the line between reality and representation. What we see before us is, therefore, a piece of reality elevated to a work of art in its very vividness, through a piece of crumpled fabric. However, the importance of the artist's gesture is in no way diminished; the object is pictorially recontextualized, as in the works of Robert Rauschenberg or Jesper Johns. Unlike the latter, however, Sergio Spataro's gestures take on a specific meaning of their own, in an artistic practice composed of color and gesture.
Sergio Spataro, "Posthumous Painter." Born in Palermo on May 17, 1951, he has been pursuing his artistic research since 1976, from painting to ceramics and weaving. He lives and works in Naples.
