Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal depictions in art have ancient origins, appearing even in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. In the pictorial production of artist Sage Vernis, animal subjects are very prominent, especially horses, birds, and butterflies. The artist's research focuses primarily on a dynamic and expressionistic rendering of their forms, through an elaborate synthesis of their figuration.
The artistic language of painter Sage Vernis begins with sensory data, then subjects it to an expressionistic synthesis aimed at enhancing its dynamic vitality. Thus, in this horse, we can see how the painter emphasizes not so much its volumes as the sinuous lines of its contours. Likewise, the depiction is not based on a naturalistic or mimetic conception; rather, the horse's form creates a chromatic field within which Sage Vernis's complex pictorial expression can unfold. His technique, in fact, is dynamic, aimed at identifying the vital energy contained within the depicted subject, in an expressionistic brushstroke, at times textural and gestural. This same expressive force also engages the space surrounding the subject, whose elaboration has an almost informal connotation. Chromatically, as is typical in Sage Vernis's work, the subject's blacks and whites prevail, juxtaposed with the acid green of the background.
Sage Vernis is the pen name of Gino Falzon, a painter born in 1916. His pictorial production is essentially expressionist and aims to highlight the vital and dynamic energy of his subjects. His favorite subjects are animals, whose forms embody the dynamic forces that the artist expresses through his complex gestural and textural painting technique.
