Description of the work
Description of the work
The artist Pietro Annigoni has always explored a wide range of themes and subjects in his artwork, combining traditional painting and technique with modern expressiveness. Known best for his portraits, he also depicted scenes of everyday life, landscapes, and mythological and religious subjects. In this exquisitely crafted bas-relief, Annigoni focuses on the representation of the human figure, more specifically that of the woman, who in this study is captured by the artist as she plucks the bud of a flower. The contemplative state of the woman—or rather, the girl, as her features suggest a young girl—perhaps hints at a more intimate sphere, in which the figure is entering a new phase, becoming aware of her own body. The bud is the girl who is blossoming. Artist Pietro Annigoni demonstrates, through the technique of bas-relief, the importance to him as an artist of exploring the subject's physicality and psychological complexity. The realistic nature of his works allows him to model figures through the use of chiaroscuro or, as in this case, bas-relief, playing on depth to bring out the figure in all its facets. Pietro Annigoni dedicates his artistic research to creating detailed works in every part, maintaining the tradition of drawing, with an in-depth anatomical study that conveys his understanding of the human body in its pure realism. Notice how the focus of the work shifts to the depiction of this girl, with her marked contours and how she bends over with the natural awareness of someone unaware of being watched. Pietro Annigoni (Milan 1910 – Florence 1988). In 1947, along with Gregorio Sciltian and the Bueno brothers, he signed the "Manifesto of Modern Painters of Reality," which advocated full adherence to natural truth through the use of ancient techniques used during the Renaissance. Annigoni's commitment to the naturalistic rendering of his subjects made him a great portraitist, appreciated by Europe's highest notables, so much so that he was called the "painter of queens."
