Salvador Dalí - The Crucifixion

A popular iconography throughout the history of Western art, the Crucifixion has its origins in the early Christian era and has developed over the centuries, culminating in the most recent expressions of contemporary art. The traditional iconography of Jesus on the cross has countless variations, from the simplest, featuring only the crucified Jesus Christ, to the version accompanied by the "mourners," the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. In the Middle Ages, Crucifixion scenes began to become increasingly elaborate: thieves' crosses were added, and, gradually, more and more figures were added, until they became the subject of large choral scenes.

Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, paradoxically accentuating the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension. This bas-relief is inspired by Dalí's famous work, Corpus Hypercubus. The dominant motif in the composition is that of the cross, which is broken down and multiplied into its volumes by the artist and left to float by mysterious gravitational forces. The bas-relief also features the same division into geometric solids, suspended in a dramatic frame that emphasizes their looming presence. Christ's body, rendered in relief, is magnificent. The scene unfolds in an undefined space where the only reference point is the mysterious checkered floor.

Salvador Dalí (Figueres 1904-1989). A major representative of historical Surrealism, he was a photographer, writer, and filmmaker (his collaboration with Luis Buñuel is famous) as well as a painter. His works are based on the principles of psychoanalytic associationism, following the teachings of André Breton. His style is characterized by a turgid, harsh hyperrealism, in which his subjects display an obsessive attention to detail. His compositions are a mix of free associations, biomorphic organisms, and cultural references.
