Description of the work
Description of the work
At the center of the composition, a human figure can be seen from behind, rendered in pink tones and almost dissolved, as if an apparition. To its sides are two birds of prey perched on branches, rendered with greater realism and richness of detail than the rest of the scene. The landscape in the background is populated by vertical architecture and sketched figures, creating a fairy-tale, mysterious atmosphere. A key element of the work is the elephant in the background; in Dalí's work, elephants often have long, thin, and multi-jointed legs, which seem structurally incapable of supporting their body weight. One of the first apparitions of this animal is seen in Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Moment Before Awakening , and it would later become one of the most iconic figures in the artist's repertoire.
The style of the work also depends on the technique used: in this case, etching and aquatint, often used together. These are indirect engraving techniques, in which a metal plate covered with a protective layer is engraved with a point; the plate is then immersed in acid, which corrodes the exposed areas. Ink is deposited in the grooves and, through the press, is transferred to the paper.
Etching allows for linear drawing, while aquatint creates backgrounds and tones by granulating the plate with bitumen powder melted onto the surface. This combination allows for a defined line and softer chiaroscuro transitions.
The work presents a surreal and visionary style, characterized by a layered composition in which figurative elements—animals, human figures, architecture—coexist with freer, almost watercolor-like chromatic fields. The background is constructed through soft glazes, with light, nuanced colors, while the foreground features figures treated with greater definition. The overall effect recalls a language typical of poetic surrealism, in which the suspended atmosphere and the use of enigmatic symbols contribute to a dreamlike sensation.
Salvador Dalí was an icon of Surrealism, a 20th-century avant-garde literary and artistic movement that sought to unleash the creative potential of the unconscious through art characterized by dreamlike imagery. The movement developed in the footsteps of philosopher Sigmund Freud, the first to explore the subconscious in all its irrationality, theories later elaborated in André Breton's 1924 Surrealist Manifesto.
Dalí's fantastical prints, paintings, sculptures, films, and writings helped solidify the movement's identity. Drawing on psychoanalytic ideas and psychic automatism, Dalí depicted fantastical creatures and landscapes capable of disturbing and astonishing. He exhibited widely during his lifetime, and his works are included in the collections of institutions such as the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. He is now an iconic artist, whose influence continues to extend far beyond Surrealism, permeating the collective imagination and contemporary visual culture.
