Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
We can see from this work that artist Salvatore Falcone's conception of landscape is extremely original. Indeed, the recording of sensitive data is deliberately lost in a vague view with strong symbolist overtones. This desire to transpose reality into a visionary, dreamlike dimension is entirely resolved on a formal level. The composition is highly schematic, constructed on very regular horizontal bands that suggest a superposition of planes within a substantially two-dimensional space. The volumes of the hut and the trees in the background are almost impalpable, rendered through very light washes of color. The artist emphasizes the rhythm of the reeds, metaphysical in their repetitiveness, which provides a counterpoint of vertical and diagonal lines that further schematize the composition. Finally, it is the total immersion in the tonal prevalence of aquatic greens and blues that gives this view such evident symbolic and emotional connotations.
Salvatore Falcone is a Sicilian artist born in Mirabella Imbaccari in 1925. His training and career took place primarily in Milan, where he exhibited his works in various shows (especially his collaboration with the Il Cigno gallery). In his paintings, Salvatore Falcone developed a compelling research based on a highly schematized vision of reality that transposes everything into a dreamlike dimension.
