Description of the work
Description of the work
Among the most common religious subjects in Salvatore Fiume's graphic and sculptural work, the figure of the angel occupies a prominent place. In particular, the artist created a series of music-making angels, each representing states of mind of joy, happiness, and serenity. In the case of the present work, "The Angel of Joy," the Sicilian artist imagines it as an angel intent on playing a transverse flute.
The composition is perfectly suited to Salvatore Fiume's style: the symbolic and religious subject, essential, iconic, and abstract as in an ancient medieval work, is recontextualized by the stylistic synthesis of the Sicilian master's most expressionistic phase. The line is thin and calligraphic, sketching the figure, while the plasticity fades and the color is resolved in compact areas. Despite this expressive essentiality, the composition has a strong dynamic thrust, through the complex rotation of the angel, which imparts a rotary motion to the work. This movement is further emphasized by the spiral lines that define the drapery of the robe.
Salvatore Fiume was born in 1915 in Comiso and passed away in Milan in 1997. In addition to being a painter and sculptor, he was also an architect. His career as a painter focused on a reinterpretation of classicism, particularly Renaissance painting and Piero della Francesca. Later, thanks to his success, he traveled extensively around the world, drawing inspiration from exotic folklore, which he rendered in an expressionist manner.
