Salvatore Fiume - Stone Horses

The iconography of this work certainly has allegorical meanings and can be described, in some ways, as symbolist due to its allusion to underlying meanings, and metaphysical due to its enigmatic nature. Along with his fascination with the exotic and distant, artist Salvatore Fiume also produced a series of works with visionary, citational, and mystical subjects, inspired by a legendary and primordial world. In these works, the Sicilian artist developed his most complex iconographies, imbued with profound symbolic meanings.

This work is part of a series in which Salvatore Fiume, while remaining consistent with his figurative language and research focused on formal values, achieves a more expressionistic approach. The subjects are more concise and essential, and the plasticity that characterizes his famous female figures is absent. Drawing is reduced to a minimum, used only to outline the characters with a few iconic strokes. The forms expand in a harmony of curved and sinuous lines.

Salvatore Fiume was born in 1915 in Comiso and died in Milan in 1997. In addition to being a painter and sculptor, he was also an architect. His career as a painter focused on a reinterpretation of classicism, particularly Renaissance painting and Piero della Francesca. Later, thanks to his success, he traveled extensively around the world, drawing inspiration from exotic folklore, which he rendered in an expressionist manner.
