Description of the work
04The subject Salvatore Fiume presents to us is that of a knight riding his horse against a two-dimensional blue background. Salvatore Fiume has explored a wide range of themes throughout his artistic career, reflecting his intellectual curiosity and ability to combine diverse influences into a coherent and singular vision. Fiume is known for his reinterpretations of myths and legends, often depicting mythological and historical figures with a contemporary approach, evoking magical and mysterious atmospheres, such as those of chivalry in this case, creating surreal effects that invite the viewer to reflect on the boundary between reality and imagination.
Salvatore Fiume's eclectic and vibrant style is unleashed in this tapestry. The work is distinguished by its bold use of color and composition, with the emphasis here placed on a two-dimensional figure and background, often characterized by a synthesis of figurative and symbolic elements. Fiume's inspiration for his work stems from diverse cultures and historical periods, creating works that blend myth, legend, and reality into a single artistic vision. His figures are often monumental and theatrical, evoking a sense of grandeur and drama. In this case, the tapestry we are witnessing tempers this sense of grandeur with a simple, meticulously decorated design, yet with bright, vibrant colors that make the work lively and witty.
Salvatore Fiume was born in 1915 in Comiso. His approach to the art world was diverse; he worked not only as a painter, but also as a sculptor, architect, and set designer. From a young age, he dabbled in graphic arts, thanks in part to a scholarship that allowed him to attend the Royal Institute for Book Illustration in Urbino. After completing his studies, he moved to Milan, a fertile cultural environment where he had the opportunity to forge friendships with artists and writers. Several short moves followed, always within the Lombardy region. He became art director for Olivetti's cultural magazine, but then decided to devote himself entirely to painting, which led to his first official exhibition in 1949. A turning point in his career was his trip to Ethiopia in 1973, where he was exposed to a distant yet fascinating culture. The master's works can today be found in some of the world's most renowned museums, including the Vatican Museums, the Hermitage, the MoMA, and many others. He passed away in 1997 in Milan.
