Salvatore Fiume - The Other Half

This type of subject can be classified within the metaphysical aesthetic. The artistic movement founded by Giorgio de Chirico reclaims images that already exist, familiar to the collective imagination. However, it creates an effect of alienation through the process of displacement, that is, the sudden appearance of an object outside its usual context, or through condensation, the fusion of multiple objects into a single entity. Metaphysical art is also distinguished by the ostentatiously illusory nature of its images.

The work appears to be a true homage paid by the painter Salvatore Fiume to Metaphysics and De Chirico. The composition is characterized by a series of architecturally rationalist buildings that create an enigmatic space, frozen in an atmosphere of suspension. Images are piled up in the foreground like apparitions, creating the typical effect of alienation. For Fiume, moreover, the lucid rationality typical of Metaphysics is a further pretext for his exploration of form and plastic values.

Salvatore Fiume was born in 1915 in Comiso and passed away in Milan in 1997. In addition to being a painter and sculptor, he was also an architect. His career as a painter focused on a reinterpretation of classicism, particularly Renaissance painting and Piero della Francesca. Later, thanks to his success, he traveled extensively around the world, drawing inspiration from exotic folklore, which he rendered in an expressionist manner.
