Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the Madonna is probably one of the most popular iconographies throughout the history of both Western and Eastern art, most often represented with the iconographic motif of the Madonna and Child. The Madonna appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced).
This work is part of a series of works, dedicated to religious or mythological themes, in which Salvatore Fiume draws inspiration from classical culture, resulting in a search for naturalism and compositional balance. The subject's statuesque build is well-proportioned, and his features are expressively defined. The composition is perfectly harmonious, based on fluid, sinuous rhythms dictated by the lines of the body and drapery. As always, the space is balanced, and the subject is perfectly central and frontal, fully adhering to the principles of harmony and symmetry. Although the figure has a monumental connotation, a certain archaic and iconic quality prevails in the representation. Fiume, in fact, clearly seeks to recapture a primordial type of abstraction, typical of ancient civilizations. This is why the figure's volumes appear to expand and swell, both in the body and in the facial features.
Salvatore Fiume was born in 1915 in Comiso and passed away in Milan in 1997. In addition to being a painter and sculptor, he was also an architect. His career as a painter focused on a reinterpretation of classicism, particularly Renaissance painting and Piero della Francesca. Later, thanks to his success, he traveled extensively around the world, drawing inspiration from exotic folklore, which he rendered in an expressionist manner.
