Salvatore Fiume - Odalisque

The subject of the work is an odalisque, a typical harem figure in Eastern courts, often portrayed in art as a symbol of sensuality, mystery, and feminine beauty. In this graphic representation, the woman is reclining on the left side of the work, resting on a brightly colored carpet. She wears a headscarf covering her hair, a reference to her tradition and cultural background. Her gaze is directed straight ahead toward the viewer, direct and knowing. Further back in the composition, three male figures can be glimpsed, positioned in the background, almost as if forming a backdrop to the main scene.

The work's style is clear and decorative, with a clean line that precisely delineates the figures. The colors are intense and distributed in flat areas, especially in the carpet and scarf, elements that immediately capture the eye. The forms are simplified yet clearly recognizable, with a balanced and harmonious construction of the scene. Salvatore Fiume was born in 1915 in Comiso. His entry into the world of art manifested itself through a multifaceted range of expression: he was not only a painter, but also a sculptor, architect, and set designer. From a young age, he devoted himself to graphic arts, supported by a scholarship that allowed him to attend the Royal Institute for Book Illustration in Urbino. After his studies, he moved to Milan, a vibrant and culturally stimulating city, where he forged relationships with artists and writers. After a stint as art director of the cultural magazine Olivetti, he chose to focus entirely on painting. His first official exhibition was held in 1949. A crucial moment in his artistic production was his trip to Ethiopia in 1973, which exposed him to fascinating and distant cultures. His works are now exhibited in the most important museums around the world, including the Vatican Museums, the Hermitage, and the MoMA. He died in Milan in 1997.
