Salvatore Fiume - Beyond the Moon

The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau or Odilon Redon, who, in addition to complex iconography, also sought a certain formal abstraction.

In this work, Salvatore Fiume's style leans toward a figurative language, although a certain degree of expressionist synthesis is still evident. Indeed, the surface of the work is two-dimensional, and the figures are constructed directly without any volumetric connotations. Even the use of color, based on aggressive, almost Fauvist hues, reflects a symbolist-expressionist intent rather than a naturalist one.

Salvatore Fiume was born in 1915 in Comiso and passed away in Milan in 1997. In addition to being a painter and sculptor, he was also an architect. His career as a painter focused on a reinterpretation of classicism, particularly Renaissance painting and Piero della Francesca. Later, thanks to his success, he traveled extensively around the world, drawing inspiration from exotic folklore, which he rendered in an expressionist manner.
