The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. The subject is likely inspired by the Divine Comedy, given the character on the left, who could be identified as Dante Alighieri.

In this work, Salvatore Fiume's style leans toward a figurative language, although a certain degree of expressionist synthesis is still evident. Indeed, the surface of the work is two-dimensional, and the figures are constructed immediately, without any volumetric connotations, using rapid and refined graphic lines. The use of color creates a highly balanced surface in the harmonious relationship between white and light blue.

Salvatore Fiume was born in 1915 in Comiso and passed away in Milan in 1997. In addition to being a painter and sculptor, he was also an architect. His career as a painter focused on a reinterpretation of classicism, particularly Renaissance painting and Piero della Francesca. Later, thanks to his success, he traveled extensively around the world, drawing inspiration from exotic folklore, which he rendered in an expressionist manner.
