Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their exploration focuses instead on the material with which they compose their works. This is evident in Salvatore Gerardi's pictorial production, where this artist has focused much of his research on broad brushstrokes of material and gesture.
Salvatore Gerardi's informal art develops through a perceptive exercise. The artist begins by acquiring sensory data and reworks it according to his highly personal sensibility. Thus, each composition almost definitively loses contact with phenomenal reality, becoming a pure transposition of matter and gesture. Salvatore Gerardi seeks to capture the impression of the reality around him, but this leads him to completely disintegrate form and translate his perception directly into pictorial gesture. In most of his works, this means transfiguring everything into a very broad and dense brushstroke, made not only of color, but also of unusual materials such as plastic and metal. This mark is shaped by the painter's gesture, and through it, the composition takes on an almost biological aspect. Everything, however, falls within a controlled and balanced framework, despite the instinctive nature of an expressionist and abstract aesthetic.
Salvatore Gerardi was born in Rome in 1938. His research began with figurative art and the study of the great painters of the past, before completely distancing himself and embarking on his own original path, inspired by Art Informel. His works are characterized by organic elements, the result of the painter's gestures and the use of dense materials.
