Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work of Pistoia-born Salvatore Magazzini also draws firmly from the Tuscan pictorial tradition of exalting plasticity, championed by masters like Ottone Rosai. However, in Magazzini, this aesthetic takes on a wholly original and personal quality. Thus, the urban landscape is constructed through a rationalist and geometric vision of regular lines and shapes, but in Magazzini everything takes on a more ethereal and rarefied quality. The volumes of the buildings, in fact, seem to dematerialize, taking on the appearance of glassy textures in this painter's exquisitely refined layering of color. In short, Salvatore Magazzini's language is much more abstract, even in the definition of a minimalist nature, where even the colors transcend the tangible to take on a spiritual and symbolic significance.
Salvatore Magazzini was born on February 28, 1955, in Pistoia, where he lives and works. He has exhibited since 1969 and is represented in the most important Italian and international collections. Among his notable exhibitions is a solo show at the Arte Fiera in Bologna, one of the most prestigious European art fairs. The Municipality of Villafranca di Verona held a solo exhibition to celebrate his 40th anniversary of painting. His sculpture (begun in 1969) is also noteworthy, especially his early work, including "The Man of Monteriggioni," reviewed by Mario Luzi.
