Salvatore Padula - Landscape

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

For this reason, his views focus on a combination of lines and volumes from which he derives an extremely harmonious and balanced composition. The transfiguration of reality into lyricism also involves a reduction of details to extract, with an expressionist approach, the essence of perceived things. Thus, the small farmhouse and the surrounding countryside are rendered in a superimposition of pure, clear volumes. In this transposition from reality to the purity of emotion, the composition plays a fundamental role. Indeed, the pictorial material is essential in imbuing objects with profound vibrations that almost seem to corrode the surface of things. Vibrations that are luminous and atmospheric, but also, and above all, existential.

Salvatore Padula was an artist born in Lucera in 1890. His pictorial production is distinguished by a rational, essential and expressive landscape that harks back to the Italian pictorial tradition of exalting formal values.
