Sandro Chia - Maternity

He is one of the most important members of the Italian Transavanguardia movement (also known in Europe as Neo-Expressionism ), together with Francesco Clemente , Mimmo Paladino , Nicola De Maria , and Enzo Cucchi . The movement founded by the critic Achille Bonito Oliva reached its peak in the 1980s , before gradually declining. He currently lives and works between New York and Montalcino near Siena . He has exhibited at the Paris Biennale , the São Paulo Biennale , and several editions of the Venice Biennale . Sandro Chia has a very heterogeneous artistic background. In 1969 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence , ^[1] where he came into contact with the main European and later also American neo-avant-garde movements; he moved to Rome for a decade and then to New York for about twenty years. Towards the end of the Seventies, after various travel experiences in Asia and Europe , he converted to figurativism and naturally and automatically joined the Transavanguardia .
