Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In Sandro Chia's paintings, abstract and figurative blend almost seamlessly. The human figure is often central to Chia's research, but everything is transfigured into an extremely experimental language, always striving for strong expressiveness.
Among the most important representatives of the Transavanguardia, a movement theorized by Achille Bonito Oliva, Sandro Chia also developed his language through a recontextualization of Expressionism and, in particular, the Fauvist movement. Indeed, in this diptych, we can see how Chia subjects the subject matter to a marked process of synthesis but also of deformation, characterizing the figures with an extremely dynamic and sinuous rhythm. Chia's chromatic choices also take on a decidedly expressionistic feel, with strong contrasts of aggressive colors that completely transcend the sensory element to acquire a spiritual and symbolic meaning. Despite his strong connection to the synthesis and essentiality of Fauvist figuration, Sandro Chia retains a profound sense of form and plasticity.
Alessandro Coticchia, known professionally as Sandro Chia, was born in Florence in 1946. He is one of the most important members of the Italian Transavanguardia movement (also known in Europe as Neo-Expressionism). Sandro Chia has a diverse artistic background. In 1969, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he had come into contact with the leading European and later American neo-avant-garde movements. He moved to Rome for a decade and then to New York for about two decades. In the late 1970s, after various travel experiences in Asia and Europe, he converted to figurative art and naturally and automatically became part of the Transavanguardia movement.
