Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
Sandro Riboni displays a highly personal and refined style. While he maintains a figurative approach, he also seeks to push it to a higher expressive height. This pushing concerns primarily the form, whereby the figures are synthesized with light glazes that render them almost evanescent. Then the color, applied in bright, luminous tones, does not fully reflect the tangible reality. Compositionally, the scene generates a sense of suspension in time.
Sandro Riboni (Pavia 1921 – 1986), a self-taught and eclectic artist, abandoned his job as a polisher at Necchi to pursue his passion for art and his personal spiritual and artistic pursuits. He embarked on a long series of study trips and research into light and color. In 1949, he participated in a group exhibition in Brest, France, and won second prize. He then embarked as a cabin boy on a ship bound for Marrakech. In 1949 and 1950, he traveled to Paris by bicycle and frequented the studio of Pierre Marzin, a late student of Matisse. In 1952, he traveled to Granada, Spain, where he attended the Institute of Fine Arts. In 1958, he opened a studio in Milan, on Corso Monforte.
