Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
In this painting, Sante Monachesi reveals his connection to the historical French avant-garde. The overall structure of the painting shows a strong affinity with Matisse and Fauvism, due to the extreme synthesis of the subject and the predominance of strong, aggressive color tones. Space is rendered through elementary fields of color, while the subjects are outlined with a synthetic black line.
Sante Monachesi was born in Macerata in 1910 and died in Rome in 1991. Along with Bruno Tano, he was one of the leading proponents of Futurism in the Marche region, founding the "Futurist Movement in the Marche" and the group "Umberto Boccioni, Futurists in the Marche." His first solo exhibition was in Recanati in 1934, marking the beginning of an intense exhibition program that led him to exhibit several times at the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial.
