Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
In this painting, Sante Monachesi reveals his connection to the historical French avant-garde. The overall structure of the painting reveals strong similarities to Matisse and Fauvism, due to the extreme synthesis of the subject and the predominance of strong, aggressive color tones. Indeed, unlike other works, which are always abstract in form but nevertheless present a complex spatiality that harks back to Cubism, in this work we note an ostentatious two-dimensionality. There is a clear desire to reclaim primordial means of expression, with primary values, connoted by purity. For this reason, even the application of color eliminates any pictorial dynamic, expressing itself in a perfect à plat.
Sante Monachesi was born in Macerata in 1910 and died in Rome in 1991. Along with Bruno Tano, he was one of the leading proponents of Futurism in the Marche region, founding the "Futurist Movement in the Marche" and the group "Umberto Boccioni, Futurists in the Marche." His first solo exhibition was in Recanati in 1934: it marked the beginning of an intense exhibition program that led him to appear several times at the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial.
