Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In this painting, Saverio Bruschini focuses on a detail of a simple town in order to conduct a realist investigation.
The investigation conducted by Saverio Bruschini in this work seems to reference Guttuso's realist aesthetic. Like the Sicilian master, his drawing structure is extremely solid and geometric. The representation is conducted along multiple directional lines, according to a non-univocal perspective. In this way, the structures of objects are explored more deeply, breaking them down within the complex space created by the artist. Bruschini's investigation continues through the pictorial layering, emphasizing areas of volume and highlighting the object's relationship with the space it interacts with. Furthermore, Bruschini employs an elaborate pictorial style that imbues the objects with existential vibrations. Regarding the palette, a range of warm, brown colors is typical, in keeping with his realist poetics.
Saverio Bruschini, a native of Lucca, was not only a painter but also a professor of art at the Augusto Passaglia Art Institute in Lucca, but above all a comics writer (he published two books on comics). He is also remembered as the founder of the first comics school in Italy in the 1970s. He was a Yellow Kid winner, a caricaturist, a draftsman, and a skilled artist with clay. Saverio Bruschini passed away in 2019.
