Description of the work
Description of the work
A popular iconography throughout the history of Western art, the Crucifixion has its origins in the early Christian era and has developed over the centuries, culminating in the most recent expressions of contemporary art. The traditional iconography of Jesus on the cross has infinite variations, from the simplest, accompanied only by the "mourners"—the Madonna and St. John the Evangelist—to the occasion for large choral scenes. It is often also accompanied by symbolic elements, such as the presence of the sun and moon or Adam's skull beneath Christ's cross.
Saverio Rao's expressionist style also returns in this dramatic Crucifixion, and in this case the bold black lines serve to create a very lively composition. The trajectories of the lines, supported by the sulfurous color, create a whirlwind of movement, in which the entire scene is compressed.
Saverio Rao was born in Carini in 1950. He attended the Faculty of Architecture in Palermo and has exhibited his work in over 300 national and international exhibitions. In addition to painting and engraving, he has created numerous murals, including the 140-square-meter mural in Camporeale entitled "The Culture of the Vine." From 1985 to 1995, he organized various cultural and artistic events.
