Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Among the most important Ligurian landscape painters of the 20th century, Saverio Seassaro stands out for his extensive production of views depicting picturesque locations in his homeland. Typical of most of Seassaro's landscapes is the composition based on the glimpse of a path, introducing a striking depth-of-field effect into the scene.
In terms of style, Saverio Seassaro's landscapes present a perfect fusion of realism and a delicate impressionistic approach to sensory details. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes the view in all its details, with a strong sense of naturalistic rendering combined with a lyricism of the everyday in simple picturesque glimpses. On the other, his refined pictorial technique allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to the canvas, thanks to rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reverberates on objects, but without interfering with the precise description of reality. The entire view is thus characterized by a clear luminosity that is revealed, by contrast, in the play of shadows. The use of a palette of soft and delicate colors also serves this purpose.
Saverio Seassaro was born in Genoa in 1917 and passed away in 2016. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Genoa, later dedicating himself to painting and decoration. From 1946, he studied in Nervi at the Torre Gropallo. A landscape painter, faithful to the precise depiction of his subject, he devoted himself primarily to seascapes (Nervi, but also Bogliasco, Boccadasse, and Camogli), as well as depicting the streets of old Genoa. His works are housed in the headquarters of the Province of Genoa and in the Chamber of Deputies in Rome. He participated in numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad and, in 1973, was awarded the Knight's Cross for Artistic Merit by the President of the Republic.
